NeoOffice NeoOffice 2014.12 installation folderWhere is NeoOffice 2014.12 installed?

By default, Apple's App Store application installs NeoOffice in the Applications folder.

However, if you already installed NeoOffice 3.x in the Applications folder, Apple's App Store application installs NeoOffice 2014.12 in a new Applications / NeoOffice folder as shown in the screen snapshot to the right.

What changes will NeoOffice 3.x users see in NeoOffice 2014.12?

NeoOffice 3.4.1 users do not need to upgrade to NeoOffice 2014.12
Install NeoOffice 3.4.1 Patch 16 to get the same features as NeoOffice 2014.12

Applications in Apple's Mac App Store must implement several security requirements. Because of Apple's security requirements, NeoOffice 3.x users will see the following differences in NeoOffice 2014.12:

Below are more details about each of these changes:

  • App Sandbox native Open dialogUses Apple's App Sandbox

Applications that use Apple's App Sandbox are not allowed to open any of the user's folders or files without explicit permission from the user. So, when NeoOffice 2014.12 tries to open one of the user's files, NeoOffice 2014.12 will display a native Open dialog set to the file's folder. NeoOffice 2014.12 will only be able to open the file if the user presses the dialog's Open button.

  • Features that require Java or Python removed

Base users: if you use Base, we recommend that you use NeoOffice 3.4.1. The Base features in NeoOffice 2014.12 are much more limited than in NeoOffice 3.4.1.

Apple requires that applications in the Mac App Store not use Java. Also, neither Java nor Python support the folder and file security restrictions that Apple's App Sandbox imposes. Because of these Apple security restrictions, NeoOffice 3.x users will notice the following changes in NeoOffice 2014.12:

    • Tables in existing Base databases that use the HSQLDB format cannot be opened.
    • Reports in all existing Base databases cannot be opened.
    • JDBC drivers will not work. Only ODBC drivers can connect to database servers. To use MySQL's ODBC driver in NeoOffice 2014.12, please read this NeoWiki article.
    • Third party extensions that use Java or Python cannot be installed. Extensions that use OpenOffice Basic or native compiled code will continue to work.
    • Several menu items in NeoOffice's File :: Wizards menu have been removed.
  • Includes 25 languages

NeoOffice 2014.12 includes the following languages so users do not need to download separate language packs:

  • Will not overwrite NeoOffice 3.x

NeoOffice 2014.12 can be installed on the same machine and will not interfere with NeoOffice 3.x. If you already have NeoOffice 3.x installed in the Applications folder, Apple's App Store application installs NeoOffice 2014.12 in a new Applications / NeoOffice folder.

Also, NeoOffice 2014.12 uses the following user preference files and folders to keep NeoOffice 2014.12 preferences separate from NeoOffice 3.x preferences:

    • User preferences folder (replace "~" with your Home folder):
    • Native preferences domain name: org.neooffice.NeoOfficeSecureEdition
  • Update check feature removed

Apple's Mac App Store has its own update check so NeoOffice's internal update check has been removed from NeoOffice 2014.12.

  • Media Browser removed

Applications that use Apple's App Sandbox are not allowed to access other applications' user preference files. This restriction prevents the Media Browser code from accessing the iTunes and other applications' user preferences. Without such access, most audio and picture files are no longer accessible so the Media Browser has been removed from NeoOffice 2014.12.
